Sony NEX-7 people samples!
For a change I thought I’d take some pictures of people using the Sony NEX-7, along with the Tamron NEX 18-200mm (review), and Sony NEX 55-210mm, (review).
This week I went out to the Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain resort and took some snaps of the Golfers in the Accenture Match play PGA event. My goal was to use both zooms at the maximum apertures, (mostly at the long end), to separate the subject and background, and to see how the relatively inexpensive zooms held up optically. Also important; can the NEX-7 focusing keep up with moving subjects, and how does the jpeg processing handle textures like fabrics and skin….

The Tamron 18-200mm e-mount lens review is finally done. The skies have been mostly cloudy here lately, so it took some time to get all the test shots I needed.
This lens has optical characteristics that are very similar to the Sony 18-200mm NEX, also reviewed at the old site. Which one is better? Let’s put it this way; optically they’re about the same, but if a smaller and lighter package is important to you, try the Tamron; however, if you like taking sweep panoramas, get the Sony version. Tamron screwed up something in the lens protocol, and the panoramas are improperly exposed, blurry and badly stitched as a result. Tamron claims they’re working on a fix, so we’ll see.
The good news is that the lens compensations adjustments in select NEX cameras correct the Tamron for CA, distortion and light fall-off or ‘shading’ as Sony calls it. It’s probably using the same corrections as the Sony 18-200mm.
The Tamron 18-200mm is optimized for sharpness at F/5.6-6.3, which is fairly impressive, and seems to be better than the Sony at the long end around F/6.3. At the wide end, (18-50mm), both lenses are very sharp across the frame, but both seem to lose contrast as you zoom out to 200mm, especially off-center. I don’t have the Sony NEX 18-200mm anymore, so I didn’t compare the two directly.

Check out the new review items, all for the NEX system. I now have a NEX-7, Sony CZ 24/1.8, Sony 55-210mm F/4.5-6.3, and a Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 at my disposal. Hopefully by tomorrow I’ll have some full size images to post from at least one of the lenses, probably in the evening. Note; the NEX-7 will be used to test all the new NEX lenses in case I don’t state what camera was used in the image posts.
Now is your chance to make your test demands, before the review, not after! I probably won’t be able to accommodate all requests, but I’m always open to fresh perspectives.
I’ve posted a new poll. This time it’s for what lens to you want reviewed first, look to the right sidebar and vote! The CZ 24/1.8 is super popular, and has been reviewed extensively by other sites, but hey, if you want that one first, OK!

I’ve been using the Surefire 123a lithium batteries for a few months now, and they seem to last as long as Duracells, while only costing half as much. They claim to be made in the USA and have a 10 year shelf life. I use these in some of my Radiopoppers flash triggers and a flash light. They’re the same as standard CR123a. Don’t confuse these with the slightly smaller CR2 batteries. You can get two rechargeable batteries and a charger (for CR123a and CR2) for $15.50. If you regularly use devices that take these batteries, use rechargeables, but don’t use those if you let the devise sit around for over a couple of weeks, you’ll wind up with no power. I haven’t had much luck with the real cheap throw away CR123a costing $1 each.
I’ll be reviewing many NEX lenses soon, including the new Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 NEX E-mount soon. Both black and silver are in stock.
