NEX-7 review posted

The NEX-7 turned in a great performance, especially when using high quality lenses, like the just reviewed CZ 24/1.8.  With that combo, the resolution is almost unbelievable!  Check out the review, and make sure you read the bottom part; that’s where all the good stuff is; the rest is basically an owner’s manual quick-start guide.

For those of you curious about how the A900 with an equivalent FF lens like the Sony 35/1.4 G would do against the NEX-7 and CZ 24/1.8; sorry, no contest, the NEX would wipe the floor with the A900-35/1.4, although that’s a hard jab at Sony’s full frame commitment more than anything else.  A good portion of Sony’s FF lenses are Minolta designs from the mid to late 1980s.

If Sony improves the AF speed on the NEX-7 or subsequent models to good phase detect levels, you can toss your DSLRs in the trash can, I know I will.

B&H photo is getting unannounced small shipments of NEX-7 cameras (or NEX-7 with kit lens) on a regular basis, so if you want one you may as well order it now.  As always, you can return it if you don’t like it, or in the current market, sell it for at least what you paid for it, or possibly more.

Sony NEX CZ 24mm F/1.8 review

I’ve completed the Sony NEX CZ 24/1.8 lens review, and it’s available on the old site.  I’m still working on the right lens review format and width issues for this site, (I won’t be able to have the wide crop tables on the bottom like you see on the current review format), so you’ll have to hop back and forth for the next couple of weeks until I finalize things.

Here’s a little tid-bit that will make some people mad: I’m glad I don’t have the Sony 35/1.4 G lens anymore, if I would’ve compared the Sony 35mm F/1.4 G using the A900, and the NEX CZ 24mm F/1.8 using the NEX-7 at apertures of F/1.8-4, the 35mm F/1.4 G would literally look like it was focused improperly, there would be that much difference at those apertures!  Both cover the same area and have the same megapixels, so it’s a fair comparison.

Believe it or not; I’d prefer this combo…

Sony NEX CZ 24/1.8 and Sony CZ 16-35mm F/2.8 samples

Here is probably the last full size sample from the NEX-7 (now available for pre-order) and CZ 24/1.8 that I’m going to post before the lens review comes out.  It’s also part of the final review set.

This time the comparison is with the uber expensive Sony A900 and Sony CZ 16-35mm F/2.8 lens, at 35mm, which closely matches the 24mm coverage, although the 16-35 at 35mm covers just a little more real estate than the 24mm.

Both images were taken in RAW, and converted in ACR 6.6, no other adjustments were make other than the conversion to jpegs.

Exposures were the same, at the same F/4 aperture.  The Sony CZ 24/1.8 is nearly….

More NEX-7, CZ 24/1.8 samples

I have two additional samples from the NEX-7 and CZ 24/1.8 (now in stock, along with the A77 body, and A77-16-50mm lens) showing the differences between a RAW and jpeg.   The RAW image was converted in ACR, color fringing corrected, mildly sharpened and saved as a level 8 jpeg.  The jpeg is part of the RAW+jpeg in which I shot these pics, so it’s actually just one shot.  Note; I don’t care for Sony’s IDC, it doesn’t offer any significant improvements over jpeg, that’s why I use ACR, it offers the best compromise in my opinion.

If you examine both (boring, but relevant) images carefully, you’ll notice the converted RAW shows much more detail.  I’m guessing you’re losing about 6-8MP by saving your…

Quick samples from the NEX-7 and Sony CZ 24/1.8

Here are a few samples from the NEX-7 and Sony CZ 24/1.8 lens.  These were hand-held while on an afternoon hike, so I’m not considering these ‘official’ and part of the review.

The full images below were converted to level 8 jpegs from RAW in ACR 6.6, with color fringing adjustments as the original jpegs have.  The out of camera jpeg files are too large to post, (about 10mb each), so I would’ve had to compress the images a second time, and I didn’t want to do that.

Don’t compare between shots along the bottom of the images as they aren’t in focus, use the middle area.  I see a very sharp, and large central area, especially between F/2.5-4.5.  From F/1.8 to F/2.5 the sides are a little soft, but look quite good at F/4.  Stopping down to F/5.6 doesn’t seem to provide additional sharpness unless you look closely in the extreme corners.

The camera jpegs are pretty good looking.  The color fringing correction works well…

New box of goodies!

Check out the new review items, all for the NEX system.  I now have a NEX-7, Sony CZ 24/1.8, Sony 55-210mm F/4.5-6.3, and a Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 at my disposal.  Hopefully by tomorrow I’ll have some full size images to post from at least one of the lenses, probably in the evening.  Note; the NEX-7 will be used to test all the new NEX lenses in case I don’t state what camera was used in the image posts.

Now is your chance to make your test demands, before the review,  not after!  I probably won’t be able to accommodate all requests, but I’m always open to fresh perspectives.

I’ve posted a new poll.  This time it’s for what lens to you want reviewed first, look to the right sidebar and vote!  The CZ 24/1.8 is super popular, and has been reviewed extensively by other sites, but hey, if you want that one first, OK!
