Canon Powershot G1X review posted!
Go to the old site and check out the Canon G1X review. It’s top heavy with lens testing, but there are already tons of reviews out there with good write-ups on the features and functions of the camera, so I skipped most of that.
The Canon G1X is a stellar performer, especially when you consider the size, and that is has a very useful zoom lens.
Folks that are picky about their images, and want to really learn how to take better pictures should look very closely at this camera. The pictures look great using auto mode, so you don’t have to worry about shooting in RAW and fiddling with apertures, shutter speeds and ISOs. Good pictures come from concentrating on composition and lighting, not the camera.
I bought this camera from B&H photo because I liked it so much, and now I use it for almost everything except paying jobs, although I have used it a time or two for Real Estate work.

Here are a few boring samples from the Canon G1X, placed along side the Sony A580 using the CZ 16-80mm and DT 35/1.8 lenses. RAW really helps out the Sony, it makes the images look as good or better than the Canon, although there isn’t a lot of difference, you have to look very closely and flip back and forth between the two in your image browser.
The photos do not have the exact same coverage because of the different aspect ratios…

NEX-C3 and Canon G1X ISO comparison
I’ve worked up an ISO comp using the Canon G1X and Sony NEX-C3 with the Sony NEX 50/1.8 OSS lens. Normally you shouldn’t fuss over sharpness when viewing ISO performance, but one can’t help but be impressed by the super high quality lens on the Canon G1X, it’s crazy sharp! Before you ask the usual questions like: did you use a tripod, or turn off SteadyShot, or did you make sure the Sony lens was focused properly; be advised it’s a big 10-4 on all three. I triple checked the Sony focus (in three different sets) to be sure it was perfect, however, I didn’t check the Canon focus, so those crops may not be the absolute sharpest! The Canon is at a 2mp disadvantage, but is showing a noticeable increased in resolution.
So just to clarify things, I used a tripod, set the camera to manual focus, used RAW+jpeg (only jpegs are shown here), and the timer at two seconds. The distance to subject was 13.5′ or 4.1m, and I set the Canon’s zoom lens to cover the approximate area as the Sony. Aperture was set at F/5.6. The is a megapixel difference, as well as the aspect ratio, so both to not match up perfectly…

I’ve posted 11 full size images from the Canon G1X. All are right out of the camera using the default settings.
I’ll show some converted RAW files soon. I had do download a trial version of adobe lightroom 4 to open RAW images for this new camera, apparently photoshop users will get the update next. As a side note; I have the first three versions of lightroom, and I don’t see much difference in the latest, so if you have version 3 you probably don’t need to bother updating; I’m not going to.
So far I’m seeing some pretty sharp images from this camera at all focal lengths and apertures. At the wide end, the centers are very sharp at F/2.8, with the sides lagging just a little bit behind, but look very good at F/4. At the long end, F/5.8 is sharp at the sides, but stopping down…

The latest box of new stuff includes; the Sony 30/3.5 macro, the fisheye and 18mm wide angle lens adapters for the NEX 16mm pancake lens, and the just released Canon G1X.
I’m going to jump right on the G1X with some samples and initial thoughts (tomorrow) as there was a mix-up of sorts. The camera came in at least several days to a week ago, and the people in the office forgot to tell me when UPS delivered it, plus, B&H forgot to let me know it was on the way, so technically I’ve had it a week already, and of course I can’t keep it forever.
I’ve been wanting to review the accessories for the 16mm pancake lens for quite a while now. I plan on doing some comps with other lenses to see how well the adapters hold up when you look closely, that should be interesting! I also have the accessory optical viewfinder for people that use the 16mm lens a lot outside.
So this is what’s coming up for review in the month of March; stay tuned!

Canon re-invents the Sony R1 seven years later, (mouse over image to see R1). Sony came out with the fixed lens, large sensor R1 in 2005 with a lot of fanfare. Unfortunately, the trend at that time was low-priced DSLRs. The R1 was a great idea, at the wrong time. Canon is trying the GX1 at the right time, with the trend solidly going to DSLR quality, in a much smaller package.
In my opinion, the Canon G1 X is the future of consumer cameras, that is, small, light-weight, using a large sensor and fixed zoom lens with image quality the same as larger DSLRs. Who wants to carry around a heavy camera all day with two or three lenses, especially on vacation? Not me, I’m not even using my A900 anymore for non-business use, it’s too inconvenient…more
