Tamron 18-200mm e-mount (NEX) samples

Here are a few sample shots from the new Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 VC lens and NEX-7.  All images are right out of the camera, standard creative style.  These samples were all hand-held, so they aren’t official.  The distances are a little long, and atmospheric issues are present.

So far, the optical performance seems similar to the Sony model, meaning the long end lacks contrast, but the short end is pretty sharp.  Focusing on the long end is spotty, just like the Sony.

Good news, the NEX-7 corrects the distortion on this lens, that’s a surprise.  I wonder if the NEX-5N and C3 do that?

VC, or vibration correction, which is Tamron’s optical stabilization works well, and is very quiet.

Sweep panorama mode is awful, meaning the images are blurry and badly stitched, but I haven’t played around with this much, so we’ll see if I can make something better.

Sorry about the crooked images:(

More images to come.

On the blurry panoramas, I’ve been keeping up with some angry customers who have contacted Tamron. So far Tamron has at least addressed that there is indeed a problem (the shutter speed doesn’t jump up), but that’s all the current info.

On the in-camera corrections, the Tamron actually uses the same profile as the Sony 18-200 lens. It works across all models from what I’ve heard.

The distortion signatures are similar with these types of lenses, so it doesn’t surprise me. Hope Tamron fixes the pan issue, otherwise, why bother with this lens for $60 less?

Well I’ve heard from a bunch of ex-Sony 18-200 owners that the Tamron just *feels* better, that it’s a bit smaller. But yeah, I dunno.

As far as I know, the NEX C3 doesn’t correct distortion, vignetting and chromatic abberations as opposed to the NEX 5N and 7.
